Overview
Project duration: 2 months (June 19 – August 9, 2013)
Problem
This case study aimed to determine how our previous study and proof-of-concept, Project Agg Glass, can be applied to other industries. The goals still needed to be the same.
Goal
Remain unobtrusive while being able to deliver relevant data. In this study we examined the possibilities of applying this technology within the medical and environmental professions.
Research
Medical
Several people from a wide array of medical fields were interviewed and asked how they, in their specific field, would use such a hypothetical product and service.
Environmental
A survey of 150 people within the broader environmental field was conducted in order to determine how they could use such a product and service in the field to aid in their own documentation and assessments.
Pain Point 2
Proposed Iteration
In an ideal scenario for the broader medical profession, the proposed iteration would be capable of displaying patient stats, medical history, and have the ability to record multimedia data such as photos, video, and voice notes that get transcribed.
The environmental sector would have a more broad use of the features of Google Glass where one can geo-locate and tag a location, record video, take photos, record voice notes and even live stream. Unlike doing all of this with a cell phone or multiple devices, this allows a field study to be conducted virtually hands-free and allow the user to remain aware of their surroundings for safety.
Usability Study Findings
Medial Field
Through hypothetical surveys of medical professionals and mock scenarios, the usability and proposed benefits of having data readily available while actively interacting with patients would prove an asset.
Environmental
A rough alpha version of the proposed concept was tested in a live scenario with several amateur and professional environmental scientists to determine how well the broad feature set would be used. The core intent was to ensure accurate data collection while being more aware of one’s surroundings.
Accessibility & Legal Considerations
Medical – The core consideration is to ensure that all access to patient records and new data collection is secure and in compliance with HIPAA laws. Extensive stress tests would need to be conducted.
Environmental – As it is not uncommon for such studies and surveys to be conducted in remote locations, a solution for data access and storage would need to be determined. As with the medical field consideration, data integrity would be a strong factor.
Conclusion
This concept has great potential in a wide range of professional fields. The core of the application has a large feature set and could easily be modified to better fit specific industry needs. As notated in these two test scenarios, broad security and legal considerations would need to be taken into account and thoroughly vetted as to be compliant with any and all applicable laws.
